1962 “State of the Art” Semiconductor Manufacturing Process Equipment

 

Shown above is the cover of a 1962 Motorola Condensed Catalog.  The equipment is described in part as: “Shown in operation – the first completely automatic epitaxial process control system.” As Jack mentions in his Oral History, Motorola had just begun to manufacture silicon transistors in the late 1950s, when he joined the company.  Diffusion and epitaxy were the key process steps used in the manufacture of transistors at this time, and Jack’s pioneering invention of the annular process augmented these existing techniques and yielded transistors with substantially improved performance and reliability.
