OVER 10 YEARS OF TRANSISTOR CONSTRUCTION ARTICLES

During the 1960s, Len authored a number of transistor construction articles.  At upper left is a section of one of Len’s first free-lance articles featuring transistor technology.  This was a construction project article entitled “Soup Up Your SWL Rig” that appeared in the January 1962 issue of Electronics Illustrated magazine.  This project was fairly complex and was designed for owner’s of low cost short wave receivers who wanted to increase the performance of their sets.  Four different transistors were required for this project, as shown at left – Raytheon CK768 (alloy fused high frequency), RCA 2N370 (drift type high frequency similar to the 2N247 shown) and two General Electric audio types, 2N170 and 2N107.  These germanium transistors represent typical devices available to the hobbyist/experimenter in the late 1950s – prices at that time ranged from $1 for the 2N107 to $2.81 for the higher performing 2N370. The scan at the upper right shows another transistor construction article written by Len, published in Electronics Illustrated in September 1972.  This article was a “hands-on” tutorial of transistor circuit theory that featured six separate circuits fabricated on a pegboard chassis.  Unlike the 1962 transistor article, this 1972 work featured generic “hobbyist/experimenter’s” transistors such as the Motorola HEP641 germanium device shown at left.  Len continued to write free-lance construction articles into the mid 1970s.
