Early Transitron Silicon Transistors Beginning in 1957, Transitron entered the silicon transistor market with large scale commercial production. This was a natural fit for the existing Transitron product lines, which included highly successful silicon rectifiers and diodes as well as a low volume of mostly developmental germanium transistors. According to David, Transitron decided not to pursue the germanium transistor market and moved instead to silicon. At this time in the industry, the potential advantages of silicon transistors over the current germanium technology were driving the strategies of many semiconductor manufacturers. At top are photos of three early Transitron silicon transistors – the black unit is dated 1957 (827) and is type 2N336. The gold unit at top left is a type 2N336, dated 1961 (6131) and the 2N118 is a US Navy qualified type 2N118, dated 1962 (6241). These are all NPN grown junction silicon transistors, and were sold primarily to the military as second source types to existing Texas Instruments model numbers.
The lower scan is from a 1964 Transitron catalog and illustrates the broad range of silicon transistor types available at that time. The large units at left are high power devices.
