Early 1960s Transitron High Reliability Semiconductor Manufacturing

Through the late 1950s and into the 1960s, Transitron was one of the most successful semiconductor manufacturers in the world.  Building on the early and sustained success of gold bonded diode and silicon rectifier technology, Tranistron offered a broad range of competitive semiconductor device types prior to the large scale development of  commercial integrated circuits in the mid 1960s.  Shown above are a series of photographs from a 1964 Transitron catalog that were intended to reflect the key manufacturing activities that were the basis for high reliability semiconductors.  The manufacturing steps shown are (1) Upper left, woman confirming accurate placement of cats whisker with magnified view of gold bonded diode (2) review/repair of automated manufacturing equipment by two production engineers (3) woman operating complex manufacturing equipment, likely a lead bonding welder (4) upper right - test and sort line, with women sorters routing/packaging different model numbers, based on results of test parameters and (5) production engineer checking results/status of device burn-in racks.  Here is an excerpt from the catalog: “Transitron is one of a handful of semiconductor firms which have pioneered in the development of high reliability devices for the nation’s key military projects.  In addition to utilizing the classic ‘feedback loop’ to meet the incredibly exacting requirements of these programs, we developed our extensive Total Reliability Program.  The result has been an extremely effective integration of research, electronic and production engineering, in-process quality control and intensive test and failure analysis functions at both the divisional and corporate level.”
