The 2N2222 Case Style Evolves

When first introduced by Motorola in 1962, the 2N2222 was available only in the standard TO-18 metal case style (see above spec sheet from 1964).   This version of the 2N2222 has been available continuously since that time. In 1965, Motorola introduced the industry standard low cost TO-92 plastic case style.  The 2N2222 was not immediately available in the TO-92 case, but has since become commonly available as the PN2222.  Finally, with the large scale use of surface mount technology in the electronics industry, the 2N2222 became available as the MMBT2222 in the SOT-23 case.  All three case styles for the 2N2222 are shown at left (the small black plastic chip on top of the middle device is an MMBT2222).  Billions of these different versions of the 2N2222 have been produced since the 1962 introduction of this legendary device.
