EARLY TRANSISTOR HISTORY AT MOTOROLA

An Interview with Ralph Greenburg

 Historic Semiconductor Devices and Applications

Shown at left are examples of 1950s Motorola germanium transistors.  Ralph discusses each of these types in the Oral History, and provides a real “hands-on” perspective.  At far left is an early 1950s EP-7 point contact prototype.  Next is an XN-1 alloy junction device, mentioned by Ralph as the basis for the first transistor circuit applications work.  The blue unit is an experimental “stud type” power transistor, predecessor to the very successful “diamond-shaped” TO-3 style which was Motorola’s first large scale commercial semiconductor product – the 2N176 (1958, week 52) is an example of this product type.
