The above photograph is from 1958 and displays the partially disassembled Explorer Instrumentation package.  Note the schematic diagram in the background, depicting the onboard transistor circuits.  At right, above, is a photo showing actual installation of the Explorer 1 satellite on the Jupiter-C launch vehicle.  At right, lower, is a photo of Dr. Ludwig holding the Explorer 1 backup satellite payload.
