A SURVEY OF EARLY POWER TRANSISTORS by Joe A. Knight TRANSITRON 1950s/60s GERMANIUM AND SILICON POWER TRANSISTORS |

ABOVE, L-to-R: Finally, by the end of 1954, Transitron achieved the combination they wanted and came out with their first Germanium PNP Power Transistors, the "2N83" (the first item and cut-open second) and the "2N84", with both rated at 10 watts dissipated power and about a dime in diameter. This final style now matches the ad picture shown on page 1. These appeared to be legitimate output devices, comparable to the Sylvania devices then coming out but maybe over-rated for power given the technology then available. The Germanium pellet shown inside is sizable for it's time.
