A SURVEY OF EARLY POWER TRANSISTORS

THE POWER TRANSISTOR

BELL TELEPHONE LABS AND WESTERN ELECTRIC

The photo above shows the complete design and various parts that went into the BTL M1777 Power Transistor assembly. This was quite a developmental milestone for the Power Transistor industry as this represented the normal construction approach for power transistors for several years to come. As was not unusual, the Bell Labs 'standard' became just that for many of the early transistor designs.

This photo shows a mechanical sample M1777 (no guts - maybe why it's red?) Power Transistor and shows the raised 'emitter' pillar in the middle where the germanium wafer would sit and the 'collector' and 'base' connecting pins.
