Trans-Aire and Howard W. Sams Transistor Radio Series The Howard W. Sams Photofact Series of Transistor Radio Repair Manuals was published in the 1950 and 1960s and provided detailed repair information on thousands of different models of transistor radios produced in the USA and other countries. Shown above are relevant sections of the August 1963 Volume 27 of the Sams Repair Manual providing repair information for the Saxony Model 606 radio – this is the same model of radio discussed on the previous two pages of this Oral History. Note the supplier listed above as “Trans-Aire Electronics” at 393 Sagamore Ave in Mineola, Long Island, N.Y. Also of interest is the photo of the radio chassis at left above, showing GE “fallouts” in the circuit. These devices are of a late 1950s/early 1960s vintage. Typical for the Trans-aire radios of the time, each transistor is stamped “MADE USA”, and with a part number id; for example, the black transistor in the center of the chassis is stamped “412”, which corresponds to the 2N412 type, used as an Osc/Converter in the circuit. The Sams manuals typically provided a transistor substitution chart for repair purposes, which can be seen at lower right.
